EFFECTIVE POND MANAGMENT - THE PONDPLUS+ APPROACH
1. AERATION
Aeration is widely considered the single most important step in maintaining a healthy pond. Adding an aerator system to your pond or lake can provide many key benefits including increased fish activity and populations, clearer water conditions, reduced algae and muck, as well as preventing icing over of the pond during winter. These added benefits of aeration will ensure you have a happy, healthy pond all year round! Diffused aeration systems increase the natural levels of oxygen in ponds by delivering oxygen to the pond bottom where it is needed most.
- INCREASED FISH ACTIVITY AND POPULATION - Our pond aeration systems will increase the diffused oxygen levels within the water of the pond. Higher oxygen levels can sustain larger populations of fish. These increased O2 levels also will cause the existing fish to become more active because they now have more air to breathe. Aeration is the best way to build and maintain a healthy ecosystem of fish and aquatic life within your pond or lake.
- BETTER WATER CLARITY, LESS ALGAE AND WEEDS - A pond that is not aerated can contain high levels of carbon dioxide. These high levels of CO2 allow plant life such as weeds and algae to thrive. Adding aeration will increase the levels of dissolved oxygen while also circulating the water and decreasing the levels of carbon dioxide. These decreased levels of CO2 cannot sustain excessive populations of floating algae and weeds. With better circulated water, and reduced algae populations, the water of your pond will become much cleaner and clearer!
ELIMINATE POND TURNOVER EVENTS AND REDUCE THE RISK OF FISH KILL - A pond or lake without aeration can become stratified. Stratified means that the water forms layers within the water column based upon the temperature. Typically the top layer is warm and oxygen-rich. This layer supports the majority of fish and aerobic pond life. Below this is called the thermocline, which is a layer of decreasing temperature and decreasing amounts of dissolved oxygen. The layer below the thermocline is generally void of oxygen and unusable by fish and all aerobic organisms. During a turnover event, a stratified pond rapidly mixes, depleting the oxygen from the surface water as it combines with the bottom oxygen-starved water. Aerating your pond will continually cause the water column to mix and will prevent the water from becoming stratified, thus preventing the possibility of a turnover event from happening. The second most common cause of a fish kill is when a pond freezes over in the winter. When a pond freezes completely over, the gases released from organic debris decomposing can become trapped under the ice and reduces the amount of oxygen available for your fish. If enough oxygen is displaced by these gases, the fish can suffocate and die. Aeration will prevent the pond from freezing over completely and will keep a hole in the ice to allow for these gases to escape
2. BENEFICIAL BACTERIA
The older a pond gets, the poorer the water quality. Beneficial bacteria help reduce the muck or sludge build-up on the bottom that occurs when fish waste, leaves, dead weeds / algae, runoff, etc begin to build up. Use our beneficial bacteria products for improved water quality, reduced odors, improved oxygen levels, and a better environment for aquatic life!
- Pond-Vive Bacteria Treatment - This blend of enzymes and beneficial bacteria are formulated to help improve water quality and reduce sludge in ponds. The Pond-Vive bacteria treatment comes in water soluble packets for extremely easy application over the entire pond!
- Sludge Remover Pellets - This blend of enzymes and beneficial bacteria are packed into pellet form. The pellets rapidly sink to the bottom to help fight the muck and sludge. This is best use for spot treatments such as areas near beaches or docks.
3. AQUATIC WEED AND ALGAE CONTROL
Algaecides and herbicides are a safe and quick way to gain control of a pond that is infested with aquatic weeds or algae. These products are a good short term solution, however, the combination of aeration and beneficial bacteria is a more effective, non-chemical way to gain long-term control.
4. BEAUTIFY WITH DECORATIVE FOUNTAINS AND POND DYE
You can maximize the visual appeal of your pond by adding a floating fountain system. Many different spray patterns are available creating aesthetically pleasing looks while also creating circulation an aeration. You can also make your fountain dazzle when the sun goes down by adding a RGBW LED light kit! Adding pond dye can also increase the visual appeal of your pond's surface while also fighting deep water algae and weeds by blocking direct sunlight to the depths of the pond.
This photo shows how quickly you can eliminate algae issues when using pond aeration in conjunction with an algaecide to kill existing algae blooms. After a one-time treatment, the aeration system will prevent the algae from returning.
